Short answer: In the reach vs impressions vs views question, reach counts unique accounts that saw your content, while impressions and views count every time it was shown or played, repeats included. Since Instagram made views its main metric across formats, impressions have left app Insights and stay in Meta Ads Manager. So in 2026, compare reach (people) with views (exposures).

What does reach mean on Instagram?

Reach, shown as Accounts reached in Insights, is the number of different accounts that saw your content at least once. It answers the question 'how many people?'. Meta's developer documentation describes it as an estimate and contrasts it with impressions, which can include several views by the same account (Meta for Developers).

Reach can be higher than your follower count. When a Reel is recommended to people who do not follow you, each of them adds to reach. That is why reach is the best number for judging how far a post travelled beyond your own followers.

Reach is also the starting point for the ratios that matter. Likes per reach and sends per reach both divide an action by the number of people who saw the post, so a post seen by 500 accounts with 50 sends is doing better than a post seen by 5,000 accounts with 100 sends.

Next to reach, Insights shows Accounts engaged: the unique accounts that interacted by liking, commenting, sharing, saving or replying. The gap between the two numbers tells you how many people saw the post but did nothing, which is often the most honest number on the whole screen.

What are impressions, and where did they go?

Impressions counted how many times your content appeared on a screen. One person who scrolled past your post three times created three impressions but only one unit of reach.

Instagram has since moved away from impressions in the app. Reporting on the change says creators no longer see impressions in Insights, while the figure is still tracked and available in Meta Ads Manager (Social Media Today). Coverage of the change is dated August 2024, and one guide gives an effective date of April 2025, so older screenshots may still show impressions.

If you compare a 2026 post with a 2024 post, do not compare old impressions with new views. They are close cousins, not the same measurement.

What counts as a view in 2026?

Views became Instagram's main metric across Reels, live, photos, carousels and Stories. On Reels, the old 'plays' label became views and still counts each start and replay. On photos, carousels and Stories, repeat views are now counted too.

Adam Mosseri called views, together with sends per reach, probably the most important metrics for understanding how content performs. So views are no longer a Reels-only number: they are the headline figure on every post.

One practical effect: a carousel that people swipe through twice now shows more views than before the change, even though the same number of people saw it. When you compare a 2026 carousel with an older one, expect the views to look higher and check reach to see whether more people really saw it.

Worked example: one Reel, three numbers

These are example numbers to show the logic, not data from a real account. Imagine a Reel that 1,000 different accounts watched. Most watched once, but 300 of them watched it three times.

Accounts reached is 1,000, because each account counts once. Views are 700 single views plus 300 accounts × 3 views = 1,600. If you divide views by reach, you get 1.6 views per account, which tells you the Reel was rewatched, a good sign for watch time.

Now imagine 80 of those accounts sent the Reel to a friend. Sends per reach is 80 ÷ 1,000 = 8%. That ratio, not the raw count, is what Mosseri suggested creators watch.

Which number should Indian creators and shops track?

Track the number that matches your goal. The table below is our suggestion. In every case, compare a post with your own recent posts rather than with someone else's account.

For a small shop selling on Instagram, the most useful habit is a weekly look at reach vs impressions, which in 2026 means reach vs views: reach for how many people saw you, views for how often. If views keep climbing while reach stays flat, the same people are watching again, which is great for loyalty but means you are not reaching new buyers.

How bought views, likes and shares show up in these numbers

A bought Reel view adds to the views count, just like any other view. Whether Instagram also counts the delivering accounts in its reach estimate is not published, and we have not found a source that settles it, so do not buy views expecting a fixed jump in reach.

Ratios matter more than counts here. If you add likes or shares without matching views, likes per reach and sends per reach can look unusual. If you do use paid actions, keep them in proportion and judge them on your own Insights, as explained in how to check bought shares, saves and reposts.

On our order form, Reel views cost ₹17 per 1,000 and the minimum is 100 views for ₹2. None of these numbers comes with Instagram's blessing. Meta's spam rules treat bought likes, follows and views as spam, so read any paid figure with that in mind.

Common mistakes when reading these numbers

The first mistake is treating views as people. A Reel with 5,000 views may have been seen by far fewer accounts if many people rewatched it. Always look at Accounts reached when you want to know how many people saw something.

The second mistake is comparing different time windows. Insights lets you pick date ranges, and one viral day can distort a whole week. Compare posts over the same number of days after posting.

The third mistake is reading one post in isolation. Reach goes up and down with topic, timing and format. Our guide on why Instagram reach gets low explains what to check when the whole account trends down.

The fourth mistake is the reach vs impressions mix-up in reports. If a brand asks for impressions, explain that app Insights now shows views instead, and send reach plus views for the same date range. If they need true impressions, those come from Ads Manager for paid posts.

Frequently asked questions

Is reach more important than impressions?
For most creators, yes. Reach tells you how many different accounts saw your content, and impressions no longer appear in app Insights anyway. Use views alongside reach instead.
Why are my views higher than my reach?
Because views include repeats. If people rewatch a Reel or come back to a carousel, views grow while reach stays the same.
Where can I see impressions now?
In Meta Ads Manager. Reporting on Instagram's metric change says impressions were removed from app Insights but are still tracked for ads.
Can reach be higher than my follower count?
Yes. When Instagram shows your content to people who do not follow you, each new account adds to reach.
Do bought views count in accounts reached?
This is not published, and we could not confirm it. Bought views do add to the views count.
