How do Instagram post views work for a photo?
Instagram now measures photos, carousels, Stories and Reels with one number called views. Social Media Today reported the change on 7 August 2024: views became the main metric for all of those formats, repeat views of a post started to count, and the old Reels plays number was relabelled as views (Social Media Today). Meta's developer documentation then deprecated the older impressions metric in the Instagram Insights API for all versions from 21 April 2025 (Meta for Developers).
Here is a definition you can quote. Instagram photo views are the number of times a photo post was played or displayed to people on Instagram, and a repeat view by the same account counts again. Meta's documentation words the metric almost the same way: the number of times your content was played or displayed.
Reach is a different number. Meta describes reach as the count of unique accounts that saw the content, so one person looking five times adds five views but only one to reach (Meta for Developers). How do you see photo views on Instagram?
The documented home of the Instagram photo views number is Insights, the report Instagram keeps on your own posts. Open one of your photos or carousels and look for the View insights link under it. Instagram changes its menus often, and the figures you get can depend on your account type, so check what your own app shows before you plan around it.
Looking at someone else's photo is a different case. We did not find an Instagram document that promises a public view count under a photo, so we do not tell you to expect one. If you searched this phrase to look at photos, this page cannot help with that. It is about the count.
That matters when you buy. Because the documented place for the number is the owner's Insights, you measure a photo views order yourself. Write down the figure before you order and read the same screen afterwards. A baseline of a few days is better than a single reading.
How does Instagram count carousel views?
Instagram's published definitions give one views number for the post. They do not say whether swiping to slide five counts differently from opening slide one, and we will not guess. What the sources above do say is that a post that is played or displayed adds a view, and that repeats count too.
The practical way to learn how your own carousel behaves is to read the views figure at the same time each day for a week before you buy anything. Can you buy Instagram photo views in India?

The rule you need to know. Buying views is against Instagram's terms. Photo views, likes, saves or shares: which is the better buy?
A view says a post was shown. A like says someone tapped a heart. A save says someone wanted to keep the post. Those are three different things, and the rate card prices them very differently, as the table shows.

Likes suit a post you want to look liked. The like count sits under the post for every visitor to read, unless the owner hides it. A like costs about five times a view (₹84 against ₹17 per 1,000). When are Instagram photo views a waste of money?
When the post is the problem. If a photo has a weak first image, no caption worth reading and nothing a viewer would want to do next, extra views do not fix it. Views are a count of exposure. They do not tell a visitor why to stay.
When you want followers, customers or comments. Bought views do not turn into any of those. If your goal is a profile that grows, the post, the caption and the next post do that work, and a views order sits beside it.
When the account is private, or you cannot measure. A private account cannot receive an order. And if you do not note the Insights figure before you order, you cannot tell afterwards what changed.
